Description

We have a few whodunnit board games that require players to use logic and deduction skills to work out who committed a crime, and we really enjoy them. Everyone is acting upon their own motives and suspicions as they try to get the hell outta Dodge back to the civilized world. Note: there are previous games along themes of The Thing, but I have only played the recent 2022 release. I’d have shrugged this off if not for the spaceship but instead was left feeling like the movie just had to push for an Iron Man moment (like in The Martian). The rules are simple and easy to explain, game play generally moves pretty quickly and it’s really engaging.

I won’t spoil the plot by giving it away, but suffice it to say the alien’s capabilities seem more influenced by how quickly the humans learn what they can do rather than what they are actually able to accomplish, which creates a sort of unique dysfuntion all its own.I won’t go into detail because I don’t want to spoil the plot, but I will mention that the alien being appears in numerous gruesome scenes. It is a fun family game similar to clue only you have your cards facing your opponents and you have to solve your own mystery, however it is so easy to cheat and see through your own cards cards ahould be with a darker background or covered so Noone can see their own cars, and it does take a bit longer than a typical clue game.

Your evidence board contains lists of all suspects, weapons and motives and by process of elimination you must check off as many as you can to fathom out who is responsible for your demise and why. Ghosted from Big G Creative presents a new direction for mystery-solving games by having each player track down their own murderer. And if you don’t have enough players to really delve into the psychological aspects of this, with every man out for himself, you can play cooperatively against the game itself as the harsh environment, sabotage and alien infiltration take their toll.

As the game progresses, you build and upgrade structures to bolster your defenses against the increasingly difficult hordes of sinners. Without looking at them, you slot them into your player board so that they are facing out at the other players but you cannot see them. If a player rolls a die action for one of the cards they’ve already solved, then they receive a ghost token.

By combining the two, Ghosted has players racing to discover their hidden cards by deducing from the shared list of possibilities. While your screen quickly becomes bullet hell, your structures are more or less automated and do all the sinner punishing for you. Each player can look then look at their own cards (not the ones on the evidence board) and mark off what they have on their evidence board. It functions similarly to Clue, but having everyone try to figure out a separate set of cards vs one shared set adds an interesting dimension to the deduction gameplay.

The psychological distress revved up very convincingly, with the characters’ paranoia escalating in ways that made sense internally.
