Magic Maze is the current trigger for this moment of self-reflection because it is a game that is obviously joyful and yet I have experienced absolutely zero joy from playing it. For example, I might be in charge of moving all of the characters North, while you are only allowed to move them East. In Magic Maze, it just feels like every second of time spent not enjoying the company of my friends is a second wasted. If there’s one small issue with Magic Maze, it’s that the group’s focus is so intense on the characters, that no one is looking to see if time has run out.

This leads to some unintentional cheating, and makes your victory feel cheap, or makes the group feel a bit daft that they didn’t see the time run out. It’s okay though – game session only last about fifteen minutes so while you’ll almost always dissolve into a mess of mixed signals and failure it doesn’t sting.

This is a nice package–a little spartan, but the game doesn’t come with (or need) extraneous components. After you’ve gotten past the first three scenarios, character-specific special abilities will be introduced. If you win at this game then you have co-operated well and used the rules to your advantage – if you lost, then it’s time to work out how you single that the time is nearly up! There’s a number of other small rules about the dwarf moving through certain low arches, the wizard seeing the future tiles, and the barbarian smashing TV cameras – but these are pasted on for complexity and a smidgen more theme.

Rather, Magic Maze allows communication of just two kinds: staring intensely at another player, and placing the “do something” pawn in front of another player.A pawn is moved and then everyone goes silent and starts acting contrary to what everyone else thought had been agreed. Roz grabs the pawn from Jasmine, you assume to redirect attention to the real guilty party, then takes over the current shift of banging it in front of you.

I love the real-time component being used to add tension, and I love the elements of exploration and discovery. Magic Maze is a cooperative real-time game where everyone collectively controls four characters: a Barbarian, Mage, Elf, and a Dwarf. There’s someone, somewhere, with a spreadsheet showing an itinerary and schedule for every last microsecond of the heist.side up is easy for beginners and 1B is for those who’ve played a game or two – Feel free to choose whichever). These pawns represent the heroic adventurers who have broken into the eponymous ‘Magic Maze’ to steal replacement weapons after their own were… something. Players may perform their actions whenever and as many times as they want using whichever adventurer they want.
