Since the beginning of the story takes place in the Grand Canyon, there are descriptions of what it looks like. I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. Feeling out of her depth Pine seeks support from her bosses and soon realises that this support is not forthcoming. I’m not sure we have them here in Australia, or perhaps we do and I’m not enough of a country gal to know.

As she gets closer to the answers though she finds more and more government agencies will do all they can to stop her. I’ve previously mentioned that I was once a fan of espionage type thrillers and an avid reader of Robert Ludlum, Len Deighton and David Morrell. sets off some alarm bells however and she notes that everyone from the national security agency to her boss’s boss’s boss are suddenly interested in the death of Sallie Belle (the aforementioned mule). I hate cliche characters, and I’m tired of reading the same character with a different name/background/job.Assigned to the remote wilds of the Western United States, she has spent years honing her skills and building her endurance, always with one eye on the ultimate goal. Fans of Baldacci’s work will likely enjoy the piece and it comes highly recommended to those who are drawn to stories of action. CHARACTER: My thoughts regarding Atlee Pine - At last, a female FBI agent who feels real and is not some Charlie's Angel or a model. However Pine’s interest is piqued and she goes undercover to follow the trail and soon finds that it goes to the highest echelons of government. Almost making Olympic status in weight lifting her character comes across as real and believable when she has to kick major butt.

The depth of the Grand Canyon’s geography: While it was meant as an immersive narrative, it got a bit too mundane and made me zone out a bit when there was little but details of the Canyon for pages on end. stars was the plot - hardly credible - and the storyline - which seemed to wander the entire USA and back again. Working with the locals who respect, and also sometimes fear her, and have never really been allowed to know her, Atlee Pine turns her vast investigative skills and unmatched drive to find out the truth. This is where the forward motion of the story slows, almost stops and churns in place for no other reason than to up the page count. There was one scene that was also over the top and too predictable (the helicopter scene—why leave the café to go talk somewhere else? HUGE things happened in the book, but that ending was so ridiculously simple that I don’t believe it. The mystery mule and disappearance of people were very suspenseful until I found out the whole story behind it and scratch my head, why? Description (from the book): “Her thighs, calves, and glutes were rocks, her shoulders and delts sculpted, her arms ropy with long cords of muscle, and her core is iron. Notorious serial killer Daniel James Tor, was caught and convicted of other murders, and while there’s no proof, Atlee believes he knows what happened to Mercy.
