An old school acquaintance is missing, and Mario's reflections on his school years (and his infatuation with that missing friend's now-wife, Tamara) occupy a considerable portion of the novel, notable for both nostalgia and cutting satire of both the educational system of Communism and the still existing class structure of the school and the state.

By drawing inspiration from fine British design traditions, we are able to connect with those who love and appreciate this rich, craft heritage.Rafael disappears and the questioning of those who knew him - which takes up the bulk of the narrative - tells his story, illustrating different facets of him and of Cuba's recent history. A reader has to have a lot of tolerance for Mario's ruminations, which don't leave a lot of room for development of other characters who on the basis of the scant evidence seem very interesting, such as "China," the half-Chinese investigator who helps ferret out the financial corruption in this case.

They come in all different shades of blue and pink and usually all have a distinctive white circle at the centre of the flower. Certainly he's sick of hearing everyone sing Rafael's praises, as he goes on interviews seeking a clue to the disappearance. It is a detective novel of the hard-boiled school, and reviewers have compared the style to Raymond Chandler's; but Chandler was never so crude. Parfum (Fragrance), Aqua (Water), Bht, Limonene, Hydroxycitronellal, Linalool, Citral, Citronellol, Geraniol. Boasting a bold, clean-lined silhouette, these sunglasses are created for a perfect fit under motorbike helmets. Rafael Morín considered “an immaculate trustworthy comrade” had been reported missing by his wife the day before.

The fact that this novel, the first of three, was written by a Cuban resident and not a Cuban exile gives it a certain sterility and dry quality one can imagine. The good thing about this though is that they are also still flowering when all the others are winding down for the winter, providing late season colour and a let source of nectar for any pollinators if the weather remains mild. He was at high-school with the man but, more importantly, had lusted after Tamara, the girl who married Morin. Padura's characters are the same age as him, approaching 40 in the 1990s, "a faceless, aimless, gutless generation.

But Havana Blue seems even more melancholy (though Mario gets the girl, in a sense) and more critical (if I'm not forgetting some of the critical edge of the books translated earlier).

The third novel in Leonardo Padura's acclaimed Havana Quartet to be translated into English by Peter Bush, is not your usual mystery novel. Conde remembered Morin from their student days: good-looking, brilliant, a “reliable comrade’’ who always got what he wanted, including Tamara the girl Conde was after.Havana’s bold, provocative approach to art, cuisine and entertainment—as well as the eclectic blend of African, French, Spanish and North American influences—including its range of architecture styles from the sixteenth century to the modern day, confer this epic city with a legendary status on par with the world’s greatest cities. As Conde and his cohorts emerged through high school into adult life, Rafael with the Colgate smile got the girl and climbed up the greasy pole of his career.
