And looking at statistics on average shot percentages for example 120 yards hitting it within 20 feet is actually a good shot. I applied it to my swing and after a month of getting used to it my consistency and mental aptitude during the swing have strengthened considerably without having to really make a big swing change.

My overall rating reflects the fact that there isn't much here for people who've already explored a lot of other high quality golf instruction books. Jon gives thoughts backed by shocking stats which the average golfer needs to consider especially when setting expectations for their next 18 holes. This book contains everything except the fundamentals of a golf swing, so you’ll need a coach or a different resource for that. Incredibly intuitive information ie- shoot for middle of green in approach shots, focus on speed primarily for putting, etc. I have yet to find a book more comprehensive, yet approachable, and so vital to learning the foundations of golf.

Our new video Masterclass allows you to consume all the advice from the book more efficiently and in less time. It just shifts your approach so that skills and time you do have will become much more fun -- for you and your playing partners.

As I kept slowly chipping away and celebrating my tiny accomplishments, I was also proving my new identity. Great for a high to mid-handicap golf player or even a low-index player—who somehow has miraculously achieved a low handicap without consulting any course strategy. I was utterly terrified of intermediate wedge shots for years and would do anything to avoid leaving myself 30-80 yards from the hole. Become a happier, more fulfilled golfer through expectation management• Understand how scoring truly occurs and use modern data analytics to lower your handicap efficiently• Learn a strategic framework a golfer of any level can quickly adopt - pick smarter targets with every club in your bag and watch your scores drop overnight• How to practice efficiently. But because I was so determined to solve the problem, I felt confident I could overcome these adverse outcomes.Guidance on training to provide a more enjoyable round where a poor score on any given day does not destroy your enjoyment of the never ending challenge which is the game of golf. Then I spent hours of meaningful practice to settle on a wedge technique that I could feel comfortable with. It will reshape how you think about golf entirely and give you the tools and strategies to transform your entire game. My score was the only litmus test of success, and when I felt it was out of reach, I would give up on the day. It was great to ground my expectations with actual stats of what people with similar handicaps (or even better handicaps) are doing.

Sherman does a great job of illustrating and supporting his concepts with statistics and objective data, while presenting in the information in an easily digestible manner. Jon Sherman takes his lifetime of experience and helps the reader/golfer through the difficult aspects of golf to make better golfers, and happier people. With these earlier chapters in the mental game section, I’m ultimately building a process you can commit to on every shot. Terrific stuff to base my game on as I move forward and remember your not good enough to be that annoyed!

But because this game can be so challenging and mentally exhausting at times, adding a bit of grit is almost necessary for most. This is a great “coaching” book; you won’t find any swing tips or advice on technical maneuvers here. I wouldn't suggest this for anyone just beginning to play and is still figuring out the ins and outs of a golf swing. I’ve played with successful business people, professional athletes, and plenty of other high achievers who undoubtedly have serious grit.

Conversely, those who genuinely want to improve and love the process find ways to problem-solve to reach their goals and outperform. It’s a commitment to yourself that you will not give up and stay mentally engaged no matter what happens. This is no different than someone trying to establish a fitness routine – the moments you feel tired and lazy are the actual test. Get detailed, step-by-step instructions on methods that will increase your skills and finally transfer your practice range game to the course.

I preferred Young’s book, even though the writing in Sherman’s is more articulate and better organized. Also, anyone who follows Jon on social media will find a lot the same things discussed there covered again in the book. When you’re looking to solve a problem in your golf game, having grit and the proper habits is usually a winning combination.
