The husband and wife team wrote and illustrated many books together, many of which rank among my favorite picture books and one of which was the source of a long-standing family joke, but I’ll be reviewing that one on another day, so I won’t spoil the story here. Faced with no alternative Frances comes to the conclusion that although she loves bread and jam she does not want to eat it at every meal.

When her mother mentions that she eats other things in her school lunch, Frances admits to trading her lunches away every day.

Bread and Jam for Frances is a Level Two I Can Read book, geared for kids who read on their own but still need a little help.

The most recent book in Cohen's tales of a first-grade class finds the children preparing for Thanksgiving vacation. Her very wise parents decide to give Frances bread and jam for breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner, until poor Frances cries at the dinner table and asks if she could please have some spaghetti with meatballs, like the rest of the family is eating. She prefers to eat the same for dinner that night in lieu of breaded veal cutlets with string beans and baked potatoes. Frances Loves PBJ's and in the mothers infinate wisdom she blesses Frances with PBJ's at every turn.
