He was a Scottish Music Hall and vaudeville theatre singer and comedian, and a substantial landowner. The twin vanishings leave Evie, friendless and subject to the mercy of cruel, taunting classmates, in a particularly vulnerable spot, prey to forces beyond her control and wishing for something far outside the bounds of life.

For twenty years, Celia Scott has watched her husband, Arthur, hide from the secrets surrounding his sister Eve's death. Despite the mystery, which made me want to read right through to the conclusion, I was equally happy to spend time with the characters, even those were quite unlikable! It has a lot of fascinating backstory and photos that shed light on Roy's inspiration for her first novel.John Lauder, was a descendent of Lauders of the Bass and Isabella was born in Arbroath to a family from the Black Isle Lauder’s father moved to Newbold, Derbyshire in early 1882 to take up a job designing chine, but died of pneumonia on April 20. There were chapters in this book where I held my breath and had to fight the impulse to turn to the last page to relieve the tension. It fit with the story and wasn't too predictable, but everything wrapped up so quickly that I just lost interest.

I completely agree with author Megan Abbott's praise of the novel: "Lori Roy transforms 1960s small-town Kansas into a haunting memoryscape. Kansas itself seems menacing, with dangerous roads and tumbleweed that looks like a monster hanging from the fence. A spiral staircase leads to a mezzanine area and the room has double glazed mullions to front aspect.

There's menace threaded all through this story about a family that moves to rural Kansas from Detroit. The room has a tiled floor covering, period style Acova radiator and further character provided by the exposed stonework, timber walls and angled ceiling. In the last month I have picked up 3 books by first time authors, and this is by far the best of the three (I couldn’t even finish The Borrower by Rebecca Makki. For a time, regrets do seem to fall away as Arthur and his newly arrived family reacquaint themselves with his mother, Reesa, and sister, Ruth, as Roy describes with patience and superior skill.

I think it was supposed to be suspenseful, but the way it was written didn't really build suspense for me at all. Even though there was plenty of suspense to keep me turning the pages, I found that I enjoyed the unfolding details of the characters as much as I did the unraveling of the multiple twists.

This address within the Hamilton South ward had a larger than average concentration of residents that were in full-time employment - 58% of the resident population. Bent Road is a long, winding journey, just like its titular street, where murder comes from love, friendship turns to ash and family bonds strengthen only through the worst sort of circumstances.
