Bollinger Special Cuvee Champagne is Bollinger's Brut Non Vintage benchmark wine. Bollinger only produces two different blends; that designed for the Special cuvee, and that which will become Grande Annee. Following the harvest period, Bollinger's decisions on blending are not made before January. The blend for the Special cuvee is an ideal version of the classic Champagne blend, using the different grapes of a given year from a variety of crus, with the addition of older, reserve wines. Special Cuvée is the result of the delicate blending between harvest grapes and a majority of reserve wines, including some aged in magnums for more than 15 years in Bollinger's cellars. Elisabeth Bollinger was also passionately involved with the House’s destiny. She was only 42 when she lost her husband at the height of the war; without hesitation and with great dignity she stepped in and threw herself heart and soul into her new role. The most significant period of its history was from 1941 to 1977, the tenure of Madame“Lilly” Bollinger, who expanded production significantly and was ahead of her time in travelling the world to promote the brand. Around this time Bollinger also acquired some of its precious pinot noir vineyards, using the grapes in the production of its two rosés.
